How safe are free WiFi of Punjab?
I was recently interviewed by Urdu News International to discuss the security concerns associated with public Wi-Fi networks, particularly the free Wi-Fi service being reintroduced across Punjab. In the interview, I shared insights on the potential risks of using public Wi-Fi and the importance of cybersecurity measures for users.
Key Highlights from the Interview:
- Surveillance Risks: One of the primary concerns with public Wi-Fi is the possibility of surveillance by the service provider. This means that any activity on your device while connected to the network could potentially be monitored, raising significant privacy issues.
- Network Security: Public Wi-Fi networks are often shared spaces, making them susceptible to attacks. Hackers can easily intercept data, gain access to devices, and cause breaches. I explained how users could unknowingly connect to a hacker’s network disguised as a legitimate one, leading to severe consequences.
- Safety Measures: I emphasized the importance of using Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) when connecting to public Wi-Fi, disabling file sharing on devices, and ensuring that only secure websites are visited. These precautions are crucial in safeguarding personal data against cyber threats.
The interview also explored the measures being taken by the Punjab Safe City Authority to secure the newly reintroduced Wi-Fi service, which leverages their existing LTE 4.5G infrastructure. While the authority has implemented advanced security protocols, including multiple firewalls and encrypted connections, I still advised caution and the adoption of best practices by users.
