But here’s the catch: when you upload a photo to these platforms, you’re often granting the app permission to access, store and even reuse your images and not just for editing purposes. Some apps explicitly state in their privacy policies that they can use your data for training AI models, advertising or even sharing with third parties.
Real Case: The FaceApp Controversy
Remember the viral FaceApp “Aging Challenge” back in 2019? Millions of users shared how they’d look decades from now. But soon after the app went viral, cybersecurity researchers raised red flags.
The app developed by a Russian company and stored images on remote servers. Users had unknowingly granted broad permissions and allowing the app to use their images perpetually The FBI in the United States subsequently released a caution regarding possible national security consequences.
What Are the Actual Risks?
Many users fail to understand that uploading their photo to an AI editing application can pose more of a threat than just their Face. You’re offering up biometric data that’s the most sensitive kind of personal information.
Biometric data includes facial geometry, eye spacing, skin texture and more. This kind of data once collected and stored, can be used for:
- Deepfake generation
- Facial recognition surveillance
- Identity theft or spoofing in authentication systems

- Avoid Logging in with social media – This often gives the app access to even more personal information.
- Use Offline or On-Device Apps – If editing can happen without uploading to the cloud, that’s a safer bet.
- Stay Away from Clickbait Ads – If you must use a free version, be cautious. Never click ads inside the app.
- Keep Security Software Updated – Anti-malware and antivirus apps on your phone can catch threats early.
