Panelist at National Summit on SDGs

I had the privilege of participating as a panelist in the “National Summit on SDGs Punjab Episode,” held on May 18, 2022, at the Main Auditorium, Baghdad-ul-Jadeed Campus, Islamia University Bahawalpur. The summit focused on aligning various issues, including cyber security, with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Clarifying the Distinction

One of my key contributions during the summit was to clarify the distinction between cyber security and cyber crime. While both are deeply interconnected, understanding their differences is crucial for developing effective strategies:

  • Cyber Security involves the measures and practices designed to protect systems, networks, and data from digital attacks and breaches. It encompasses proactive approaches to prevent unauthorized access, ensure data integrity, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Cyber Crime refers to criminal activities conducted via the internet or other digital means. This includes hacking, identity theft, cyberstalking, and other forms of malicious behavior aimed at exploiting vulnerabilities for personal or financial gain.

Aligning Cyber Security with SDGs

In aligning cyber security issues with the SDGs, I highlighted several key areas where improved cyber security can directly support the achievement of these global goals:

  1. Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure:
    • Cyber Security’s Role: Ensuring secure digital infrastructure is essential for fostering innovation and building resilient industries. Robust cyber security measures protect critical infrastructure and support the safe development of new technologies.
  2. Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions:
    • Cyber Security’s Role: Addressing cyber crime contributes to stronger institutions by promoting trust and safety in digital environments. Effective cyber security measures help uphold justice and protect the rights of individuals online.
  3. Goal 4: Quality Education:
    • Cyber Security’s Role: Educating students and professionals about cyber security enhances their ability to navigate digital spaces safely. This aligns with the goal of providing quality education and equipping individuals with relevant skills for the modern workforce.
  4. Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being:
    • Cyber Security’s Role: Protecting health data and maintaining privacy is critical for ensuring well-being in a digital age. Cyber security measures help safeguard sensitive health information from breaches and misuse.
