Chief Justice Opposes PTA Banning X

Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court, Justice Muhammad Shafi Siddiqui, has warned the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) that it could face contempt charges for reinstating the ban on X (formerly Twitter) in Pakistan.

During a hearing on PTA’s revision appeal, the chief justice expressed displeasure after PTA lawyers admitted the platform had not been restored. PTA filed for the revision based on a recent notification from the Ministry of Interior, but the court questioned whether this represented professional misconduct or misrepresentation by the regulator.

The Chief Justice pressed the PTA team to clarify who had instructed them to change their position. When no clear answer was provided, the court warned that contempt of court proceedings could follow. The Deputy Attorney General’s attempt to justify the situation due to case-related pressure was dismissed by the Chief Justice, who stated that this was no mere human error.

Some PTA lawyers distanced themselves from the revised stance, and the court questioned why PTA hadn’t remained neutral instead of presenting conflicting positions. The court made it clear that it would not retract or revise its previous ruling.

The next hearing has been scheduled for September 24.
